Chapter 7

The sound of the phone ringing is overpowered by the sound of bulldozers. I shake myself from my sleep, not sure if I am dreaming. When I am certain that I am not though, I jump out of bed and run to the front of the house.

Watching through the living room window now, I see two, then three, then five bulldozers pulling up to the house. They are not doing anything really, just parking there, and then the drivers dismount, and make off in a couple of pickups.

The phone is still ringing.

“Hello?” I say, the sleep completely gone from my voice now.

“Tiara, hello…” It’s Charles.

“What do you want?” I ask him, although that isn’t really what I want to be saying to him.

“I know you’re mad. I will sort it out, I promise. I’m sure we can come to some sort of arrangement, after your grandfather is dead…” Charles really has no tact.

“Wow, really? I don’t know how you do things in Tennessee Charles, but this is certainly not how I am used to people doing business. When my grandfather is dead? Well he is still very much alive, and going nowhere. So you can call off your bulldozers and get the hell off our property…” I am really angry, but not at Charles.

I know that there is a kingpin who is running Charles and I almost feel sorry for him. But I tell myself that he has billions, so he can afford to have me managed. Perhaps he likes being managed, so that the responsibility of decisions to evict an old man from his home doesn’t rest exclusively on his shoulders.

“That’s not what I meant…I meant to say…” Charles starts.

“I really don’t care what you meant to say Charles. It doesn’t matter now, not anymore. You do what you have to do, and I will do what I must do…” I speak words that I really don’t want to be saying. I want to ask him to help me, to make this go away. But I know that I have to handle it on my own, because Charles really cannot help me, even if he wanted to.

“Tiara, can you listen to me for a moment?” Charles says, the authority in his voice taking me by a bit of surprise. I keep quiet, listening to what he has to say to me. “The bulldozers won’t do anything. They’re just there to scare you, to put pressure on you and your grandfather to leave. Don’t leave. Don’t leave the farm at all. I will bring you what you need, and we can discuss this later.”

Charles hangs up, and I am feeling slightly conflicted. I am feeling relieved that he seems to have a plan, but I am a little anxious, feeling that this might be an elaborate effort to distract me until the two weeks are up. I just don’t know.

This deadline is also getting dangerously close, and I haven’t even thought what I would do with my grandfather if he lost the farm.
